This is my favorite time of year. The nights are cool, but not yet really cold, and the days are still mild - even hot. There is plenty of work to be done in the garden, keeping the crops we have well tended as well as starting to put some beds into green manure and bedded down for the winter ahead. But in spite of the activity, a feeling of calm starts to pervade over the garden. We are busy but not frenetic. There is a bit more time to enjoy our surroundings and enjoy the company of the people around us. As the outside world slowly settles down there is an almost unconscious inclination to turn in and be more reflective.
